The Convair F-106 Delta Dart began as an advanced version of the F-102 but because of somany modifications and design changes it became a new aircraft with its own designation. It wasdesigned as a missile carrying all-weather interceptor against Soviet bombers and served in thisrole from the 1960s until the 1980s. The F-106A as well as the F-106B two-seat trainer servedwith 15 fighter interceptor squadrons starting in 1959. The aircraft was rarely referred to as theDelta Dart but was commonly called the 6.
In September 1959 Convair 58-0766 was the 124th F-106 produced and delivered to the 456thFIS Castle AFB, California. October 1960 the aircraft transferred to the 71st FIS and then on tothe 94th FIS in 1969 and the 2nd FIS in 1971. In 1973 it moved to the 171st FIS before leaving forthe 159th FIS/125th FIG Florida ANG at Jacksonville in 1974. In December 1986 58-0766 wassent to AMARC. It eventually was converted to a QF-106 drone and shot down February 1, 1994.
