The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight.The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation,target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United StatesNavy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name Tomcat is said to come from thecall-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of givingGrumman aircraft feline names.
What would become VF-211 Strike Fighter Squadron 211 Fighting Checkmates began in 1945as Bombing Squadron SEVENTY FOUR (VB-74). On December 23, 1975 VF-211 made its firstF-14A flight signaling the end to their old F-8 Crusaders. VF-211 was the ninth USN squadron toreceive the F-14A Tomcat. In late 2003 the Fighting Checkmates left on their final F-14 cruise insupport of OIF and would return to NAS Oceana in 2004 to start the transition to the F-18FSuper Hornet. F-14A 161603 was SOC April 20, 2005.
