The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight.The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation,target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United StatesNavy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name Tomcat is said to come from thecall-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of givingGrumman aircraft feline names.
VF-84 was established on July 1, 1955 as VF-86 but changed to VF-84. This was the third unit tobe named VF-84 and they assumed the nickname Jolly Rogers. F-14A 160408 c/n 264 made anappearance in the movie Executive Decision as Vic 201. In 1993 and assigned to VF-84 160408deployed with the USS Theodore Roosevelt on March 11, 1993 until September 8 for a cruise tothe Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Sea. This would be their last on USS Theodore Rooseveltas they were disestablished on October 1, 1995.
